Because not knowing about the laws that affect you is like trying to play a sport without knowing the rules – you can't possibly win. Virginia's laws govern everyone, but it's good to know which laws have particular importance for teens.

Distracted driving is the number one killer of American teens.

Here are some FACTS:

  • In 2013, ten percent of all drivers 15-19 years old involved in fatal crashes were reported as distracted at the time of the crashes. This age group has the largest proportion of drivers who were distracted.

  • For drivers 15-19 years old involved in fatal crashes, 15 percent of the distracted drivers were distracted by the use of cell phones.

  • Our youngest and most inexperienced drivers are most at risk, with 10 percent of all distracted driving crashes involving drivers under 20.
